Remember when you thought getting fit was going to be easy? Just a few steps, right? Eat healthy and exercise. Walk more. Run more. Lift more.
Except, getting fit isn't easy. Getting fit is hard. It’s not only hard in one way. It’s hard on your muscles. It’s hard on your psyche. It's hard on your soul. It's work. It hurts.
Congratulations though. You have already made the first decision. You have chosen to make yourself better. You want to improve. You have broken through the mental barrier and are diving into the frigid waters of fitness. You know what you need to do. You need to cut the crap. And, there is a lot of it too. Eating healthier isn’t that complicated. Eat more vegetables. But you crave. Eat more fruit. You still crave. You crave until you cave ... but you don’t quit. You keep trying. You browse magazines and social media and see the models while they sip their lattes and feast on giant meals. You wish it was easier. Newsflash. It is not easy.
You walk and it rains. You run while your legs and lungs fight you. Your clothes are uncomfortable but you’re reluctant to buy anything new until you can see progress. Breathing is hard. You feel slow. You are sore. You are drained physically and emotionally. But you keep going.
Meanwhile, life keeps going too. Your friends and your family don't share your same goals. They get in the way. They eat. They drink. They don't necessarily work out. At the same time, your brain tells you that you're starving. You’re not. You’re just tired of salads and the amount of chewing it takes to eat all those vegetables. And then, you have to work out even more because you just realized how many calories are in your favorite salad dressing.
You know you’re not supposed to weigh yourself but you do anyways. That's all? You want to quit. Quitting is easier. You think you were happier before you started this journey. Yet, you don’t quit.
You’re tired of running, walking, lifting - whatever you're doing - you are tired of it. You need to try more things but that's too big of a step. You stay up at night reading and watching YouTube fitness videos. You get motivated and feel like you can do it. Morning comes and ... your motivation is gone. You are not ready. But, you get out of bed anyway. You try push-ups. You do sit-ups and lunges. You plank until you collapse. You keep going. You remember reading about turmeric and all of those better sources of protein than what you are eating. You try those. You even buy a new blender and try making shakes for breakfast. Telling yourself that they taste great doesn’t work. They are gross. You spend more late nights looking up fitness routines. Everything looks too complicated. Although, when you finally get yourself to try them, surprisingly nothing bad happens even though your brain told you otherwise.
When you get yourself to the gym, you stare at a lot of people. Surprisingly, not a lot of people stare at you. They are not as perfect as you thought: You are not as imperfect either. Finally. You get in your own zone and you make progress.
Life happens and you may find yourself off the bandwagon. It may be hard to even think about restarting. You remember how hard it was the first time. You remember how it hurt. Do you remember the progress? You roll off the couch and lay on the floor. You push up to a plank. It's twice as long as when you first started. Maybe you counted faster? No, you didn’t. You are stronger. You can do this. You run again and it hurts like hell. You sweat; you cry; but, you’re back. You are doing this. You keep going even though you slow down. You don’t stop. You'll never stop. You smile. This is who you are now. You are comfortable in your clothes. You need to sweat. Improvement is all that matters. There may be setbacks, but you will keep on going. Because now…
You know you are unstoppable.
